Top Ten Performances

Below are my Top Ten Film Performances from the silent era to the present. Because I haven’t seen enough silent films to make yearly top ten lists, I have lumped the entire period together. Also included is a top ten list of “early talkie” performances, using a somewhat arbitrary time span from 1927-1930. Beginning with 1931 I have included my top ten lists on a year-by-year basis.

In addition to the top ten lists, I have included three other categories: Runners-Up, for other top ten worthy performances that barely missed the cut; Other Worthwhile Performances, for lesser but still good performances; and Best Overlooked Performances, for forgotten or underappreciated performances that deserve more recognition.

In the spirit of equality, I have decided not to separate the guys and the gals into traditional “actor” and “actress” categories or to make a distinction between “Leading” and “Supporting” roles, meaning that brief but memorable parts like, say, Elsa Lanchester in Bride of Frankenstein or Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross are equally eligible for inclusion as, say, Gunter Lamprecht, who’s in just about every scene of the eighteen hour Berlin Alexanderplatz.

3 Responses to “Top Ten Performances”

  1. WOW!!! What a list of top performances. As I looked at this site I was taken back to when I was younger and had seen quite a few of the movies. And for the performances that I remember, I would have picked the same as you did. You did a great job on this and I am amazed that you have seen so many movies.

  2. Wow! Your site is amazing. Even for those instances where we disagree, I imagine we would have some interesting discussions.

What are your future plans with this very informative site?

  3. Thanks for asking. I am in the process of compiling a “Top Ten Film Score” list similar to the other “Top Ten ” lists on the site.

I am currently writing a review of Once Upon a Time in the West, which I hope to post in January.

Also, awards season is coming up and I will be presenting the 3rd Annual Noff Awards. The nominations will be announced in February, with the winners to be announced in March to coincide with the Oscars.
